My passion is marine science.
I discovered my passion for marine science on a trip to the aquarium when I was around 12 years old. There, I learned that our ponds, oceans, rivers and seas are being contaminated, that global warming is endangering species and many marine animals are becoming extinct. At the time, I wondered how it was possible that animal and plant populations were becoming endangered or extinct. As I have grown older and taken more advanced science classes, like Biology, I have learned that humans are a huge reason why this is happening. Since humans are mostly at fault, I became interested in the human behaviors that caused or could resolve these issues. It is never too late for humans to change their habits that damage our marine habitats. For this reason, I have grown an interest in Marine Science and a passion for fighting for marine species.
I could not think of a more qualified and well-suited candidate for the Ecology Project International: Costa Rica program. Samantha is a highly capable, humble, grateful young person who is eager to explore the world and deepen her understanding. Samantha, like most of our students, lives in a densely populated part of Oakland, and does not get to travel to rural or far away places often. Speaking with Samantha about Costa Rica, I've seen how thrilled and excited she is by the prospect of seeing biology and marine science come alive, in the vibrant and colorful Costa Rican terrain. Her passion for learning and traveling would crystallize even further, as her dreams about earth's natural marvels would materialize. Samantha is kind, flexible and is a student I would love to travel with, as her excitement would be contagious and her thoughtful commentary engaging.
Attending Ecology Project International: Costa Rica was unbelievable. The people I met allowed me to view life in a different light. I learned that in life, the small things are the most valuable things. When I first arrived in San Jose, Costa Rica, I noticed how happy everyone was. The more I talked with my instructors, the more I learned that some of the people who lived near EPI's campus (the happy people I saw) went days without eating satisfactory meals, yet their attitudes reflected the complete opposite. Costa Rican's have a popular phrase, "Pura Vida." Pura Vida has different meanings, it can be a hello, a thank you, or even a life is awesome. And although not all of them have wealth, they all manage to find their "Pura Vida."
Not only did I enjoy meeting people, I pushed myself in ways I had never pushed myself. I flew into Golfito, I swam in Golfo Dulce, I worked with Black and Hawksbill sea turtles, I hiked through the rainforest, and I was able to eat popular Costa Rican dishes. Also, I was able to zipline in the rainforest!
Being away from home changed me. Even though at times I got homesick, I enjoyed myself and I pushed through, and at the end of my program I realized I was more independent and responsible.
Thanks to your donations, I was able to attend this program. And thanks to this program, I have grown into a better person and have memories that I will never forget.
I am so excited to attend Ecology Project International: Costa Rica this summer! I can not wait to work with the endangered Leatherback Sea Turtles in an effort to restore some of the damage these beautiful animals face. Going to a new country, experiencing the culture while pursuing my passion still feels unreal. I'm happy to work alongside peers who share my passion and am anxiously getting prepared for this unforgettable summer. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience- never in my life did I think this would be possible, and I am grateful for all my donors. I'll keep you all updated! :)
Disfruta y aprende en este viaje, una gran experiencia en tu vida Sammy ya que es el comienzo de una vida llena de éxitos que vendrán a ti.
Because we value our daughter's opinion and insight so highly, you must be a very special person, who, one step at a time, will be the change we need in the world. Have a wonderful trip!! Roy Friedland, Kate McNeil
Samantha - I am so excited that you are going on this trip. I can't wait to hear about your experience after you get back.
Samantha -- I am Anna's Grandma. I once heard a professor from Perdue University talking about his work in Costa Rica with the endangered Leatherback Sea Turtles. It is an exciting program and what a great experience it will be for you! Best wishes!
You. Go. Girl.
This sounds like a wonderful experience, Samantha! I wish you a great and successful trip! I hope to hear about it and see some pictures. :-)
