My passion is cultural studies.
I spent my childhood perched on my window sill which overlooked the busy street of Grand Concourse. The cultural background of the Bronx gives me the ability to speak out for those who do not have a voice. I always had an interest for learning about other cultures because of the giant melting pot of cultures in the Bronx. I grew up listening to my Dominican neighbors blare out their bachata music at 6 A.M and eating Chinese food from the corner store. I always had a passion for learning about other people. My passion even allowed me to travel to other countries to study the interaction of people. Growing up with people of all ethnicities made me realize that this world is gigantic, and it is filled with people with interesting beliefs and beautiful languages.
The history of Barnard is full of empowered women who were determine to fight for their education. I want to receive my education in an environment where women are passionate about their studies in order to be successful. I visited the campus last fall and realized that this is my dream college. Barnard Young Women's Leadership Institute will help me decide if I want to pursue cultural studies as my major in college. Learning about my passion with others like me who love this field of study would be a good experience.
Aisha is an excellent candidate for the Barnard Young Women's Leadership Institute because she is already a leader. Although she is just a teenager, she already views the world with equal parts wonder and responsibility for its future. Aisha is an activist in her school, promoting human rights as well as challenging popular ideas, constantly modeling open and respectful dialogue that inspires curiosity and knowledge that is personal. She will benefit from participating in this program by being exposed to more role models who can show her even more ways that she can develop her skills and approach. She certainly has the passion to do so.
This is a phenomenal program which shaped the my perspective of the world by exposing me to works of legendary writers and by encouraging conversations about leadership. Anyone who completes this program will leave feeling fulfilled because of all the activities and workshops available.
