My passion is kayaking.
When I was in about 8th grade I was fortunate enough to go on a trip to Jamaica with my mother. That was the first time that I went out of the country, and was able to explore a culture completely different from my own. I watched these natives perform actions that I only dreamed I could do back home in CT. They all seemed to live a life of serenity, where music was always playing, and fun times were always had - though, it may just have appeared that way because it was summer! On that life-changing trip, I realized my (almost) obsession for leisure activities like kayaking, hiking, biking, etc. Now that I'm older and have been able to experience more similar activities, that child-like passion I'd once had for adventure has grown into an appreciation for life, and a desire to understand more about the world.
After reviewing Wishbone's Mission and purpose, it is difficult for me to find many more deserving students than Dhasiya. She is a committed, focused, determined and successful young woman who takes her job as a student seriously. She is a young woman of great character and has a love of life that radiates to those who surround her. Dhasiya is a person of many varied interests from the athletic fields to her active involvement in our program to her interests in the exploration and the preservation of natural world. The YMCA Adventure Camp would be a wonderful opportunity for Dhasiya to build on her love of nature and to hone/learn the physical and interpersonal skills that will serve her for many years.
These past two weeks have gone by so fast and have taught me so much about friends, responsibility, growing up, and being myself. Throughout these 2 weeks I was able to travel to Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod by bike (and ferry), teaching myself the values of proper eating, exercise and appreciating the small group of people that surrounded me throughout the trip. Though this trip was extremely hard physically as we biked a total of 145 miles in 10 days, I do not regret any part of this experience. I met people from all over CT and the world whom I now consider a second family and plan to continue communication with. I annoy thank Wishbone and my sponsors enough for allowing me to participate in this camp as these past 14 days have influenced my life in more ways than one.
I will be attending the YMCA Two Week Adventure Camp in July of this summer, and I could not be more excited! I'm really looking forward to this program because I will be able to enjoy various activities that interest me like kayaking and biking for two weeks in such a beautiful location. Throughout the year, I do not have many opportunities to participate in camps or activities like this one, and thus, I'm really happy that I'll be able to this summer. Also, I'm really excited to meet and interact with kids around my age who are have the same adoration for an active lifestyle. I'm positive that I will learn a lot from the people I meet, and will develop long-lasting friendships. Lastly, I strongly believe that this camp will further strengthen my love for the outdoors, as well as the environment. After going to this camp in the summer, I think that my perspective on life will change and that I'll be able to have a better grasp of what I want to do and be in the future!
