My passion is equality and justice.
My beliefs about the importance of equal opportunities started during my freshman summer. Due to my learning experience at SMASH Stanford, I became passionate about changing the depressing statistic regarding the lack of people of color going to college. When I grow up, I want to be prosperous and share my wealth with my community by creating programs that help disadvantaged individuals.
In order to have a world of justice, we have to work as one and have our voices heard. Collaborative team work will help me reach my passion, and that is exactly what Outward Bound California offers. Working with a team in the open environment with an opportunity to reflect on one's own strengths and weaknesses will aid me in learning more about myself.
"It has been a tremendous honor to watch Carlos grow into the mature, responsible, charismatic, curious, accomplished young man that he is today. As Carlos expressed, he is hoping to experience the power of collaboration to achieve a common goal, and I know that he is eager to have more than a theoretical or school-based understanding of this idea. While our school is able to offer students insight and experience with the power of collaboration, we are not able to offer students hands-on experience with things like ropes courses and climbing over a wall in the way that I know Outward Bound can do."
Back to computers and technology! The program I attended over the summer was called Outward Bound California. This program was beyond what I had expected. In my mind, I had imagined us crawling over boulders trying to make it to the top. What happened, was that we stomped over 100 ft. high rocks with the support of my team and belayer. In my mind, I had imagined us only rock climbing at the same spot over and over. What happened, was that we got the chance to hike around the Sierras to climb a lot of mountains. In my mind, I had imagined there being more diversity within the group of people I was with. What happened was that my friend and I were the only people of color. This isn’t bad thing however, I had just never been placed in a scenario where there were less people that looked like me. This made me realize that this is how college might play out for me in the future. I learned how to deal with that difference and made great friends with everyone at the camp. A lesson I learned about society is that no one knows what they are doing. No one has life figured out, and that everyone just follows trends, and only follow one path to “success” instead of doing what they want to get to their own goals.
None of this would of been possible without the generous support from my sponsors, and from my advisor, Ms. Little, whom helped me a lot throughout the application process. Thank you everyone so much, I hope life repays you in a greater way!
To start, I really want to thank Wishbone and my donors for helping me raise funds for this trip! Thanks to all of you, I will be given the opportunity to attend Outward Bound this summer in August. At Outward Bound, we will take on the challenge of rock climbing at the High Sierra Alpine mountains. Let's keep in mind that I just went camping for the first time three weeks ago! This does sound a little bit scary, but I am willing to do get out of my comfort zone for the new experience! I decided to choose this program because what are the chances that I'll ever get to have this opportunity at my age again?
I am looking forward to making it to the last day on my trip without losing any piece of myself! From what I've been told on behalf of Outward bound, this trip will not be easy. I am being advised to make sure I am in condition prior attending the journey. I am currently preparing for rock climbing by going to the gym and lifting to make sure I have a solid upper body as well as solid quadriceps. I am also expecting to be a different person for the better. I get the feeling that this trip will make me more appreciative of the things I take for granted. I hope I become a more confident person as well, someone who doesn't hesitate on being the first one to take lead.
Congratulations on taking the challenge of Outward Bound! It will be a wonderful experience!
Keep the hard work and focus on such a noble cause.
Carlos, I hope your campaign is successful, and I am sure you will have a wonderful experience at Outward Bound! Best of luck there and in all your future endeavors!
I love your enthusiasm and your desire to make a difference in this world. Good luck on your remarkable journey. I know you will make the most of it. And, I am so glad you have dear Ms. Little as your mentor. We remember the teachers that impacted our lives and I am sure you will always remember Ms. Little for the lessons learned, for her way of relating to her students, for her wisdom and for her love and support. She changes lives in the same way that you will in just a few short years.
Best wishes Carlo and thank you Ms. Little!
