My passion is creative writing.
It all started when I was in 2nd grade and my English teacher showed us a new type of writing called creative writing. She said all we had to do was make up our own stories about anything we choose. When she allowed us to write our own stories, I wrote about superheroes and how they saved the world from Super Villains. When class was finally over, I realized that I actually loved creating stories from the top of my head and writing them down. I told myself that one day, I want to write a book series on my stories about a hero who comes from an unexpected place of origin.
Going to the Emerging Writers Institute will help me explore my passion by showing me how to write like a professional writer. I need to be able to write like a professional because I want to write books that everyone will want to read. In order to do this, I need to learn certain tricks and techniques that will make me a crafty writer that everyone will love. Due to the techniques that I already know, I will be a decent writer but with a little more help maybe I could be a brilliant writer like Cassandra Clare, Rick Riordan, Heather Brewer, and J.K. Rowling.
Kymani is a good candidate for the Emerging Writers Institute because it appears that the program will help him develop specific writing skills and tendencies that may not otherwise be brought out in a traditional classroom setting. Kymani can be a very strong self-critic. My observation is that this self-criticism can be something of a censor on Kymani's creative and academic output. The Emerging Writers Institute looks like an amazing opportunity for Kymani to grow his relationship with this self-criticism and perhaps use it to enhance, rather than censor, his creative writing.
Being there was one of the best experiences of my life. It allowed me to meet people who helped me learn how I could become a better writer. Also, it gave me the time to see what my writing was missing. The feedback I got helped my story seem less unrealistic or out of the ordinary. All and all, I felt like I became a better writer and met people who were able to understand where I was coming from.
Thank you all for donating and giving me the chance to be able to go and gain experience for my future career. You have done me a great favor and for that I am grateful. This summer is a path that I have chosen to better myself and my abilities and become more successful in creative writing. I will meet new people with the same drive and passion for writing and bond to become better writers together. Thank you!
I was lucky to teach Kymani during his time at Excellence Boys. I'm proud of the growth he made in 7th Grade Writing Class, and has continued to make at UCHS. Keep it going, KA!
