Ever since I was a little girl with thick black glasses and pigtails, I loved to come home and draw. My mom bought me a big white sketch pad. I drew pink flowers, and yellow butterflies, like a little girl would do. However, as I got older, I became intrigued by the huge skyscrapers, paintings at the Museum of Modern Art, and design. When I went to a museum, I would come home and try to draw a landscape with lofty green trees and a brown brick road in hopes to inspire others. I admired the use of different patterns to create a beautiful work of art. Art allows me to relax from an intense day at school and channel my emotions into a single picture or poem. Art has many different forms. From writing poetry to photography, art inspires millions daily. I want to inspire others through architecture. I didn't know if I wanted to use different patterns to create clothing, or paint a picture through words; finally I came to the conclusion that I could change the lives of others by building better homes in low income communities.

With confidence, I can say that Makaila is the brightest student in our entire school. She has enormous potential, but has never had the opportunity to develop her true passion - art. Her teachers, advisor, and mom have pushed her so hard in academics that she has never been able to express herself creatively. At Skidmore, Makaila will be able to earn college credit in a liberal arts class (thus preparing her for freshman year classes at a top college), but she will also be able to take a studio art class. This combination of experiences will not only equip her to be successful at a most selective college, it will feed her soul.
My summer program with Print Nation at Skidmore was significant because it exposed me to different forms of art. Below is a picture of a relief print I made during my time at Skidmore. During this process, I drew a picture, carved it out, and put black paint over it. If I didn't like my wood cut, I could do a print on a copper plate. Skidmore exposed me to art that was not digital, which was all I really focused on. This exposure to different forms of art has given me options to choose from if I decide to major in an art course when I go to college.
A piece of advice that I would give someone attending this program in the future is to plan on managing your time. At Skidmore, we didn't have to be in the residence hall until 11 pm, and lights out was at 1 am. It did not matter where we went or what we did as long as we checked in on time. We were given an immense amount of freedom, and some people struggled to manage their free time with their course work and consequently failed their classes. In order to prevent that, individuals should plan on proper time management. Skidmore taught showed me what it is going to be like when I attend college, so it was nice to be exposed to that life before going. Thank you for am amazing experiences!
This is one of the many pictures that I created in my digital foundations class at Skidmore. In order to make this photo, I took a picture of my friend Emmanuel and uploaded it to photoshop. Then I uploaded a picture of 9/11 and created a clipping mask in photoshop. After repeatedly doing this, I lowered the opacity of the photos and drew a black line to outline his shirt. I have really been enjoying my time at Skidmore. The program is great so far. I made a lot of friends, and I learned a lot about different types of art.
As an aspiring artist, I cannot wait to step foot in a real art studio. Certain circumstances have inhibited me from taking professional art classes, but I continue to draw pictures of landscapes and cartoon characters. I really want to increase my artistic skills. I am determined to adopt non traditional styles of art and gain confidence in my work. Because I live in a small community in Brooklyn, I am nervous about how I will fit into the new environment. At my last summer program, I had trouble making friends, which might happen at Skidmore; I will try to find similarities between myself and other kids attending the program and hopefully maintain long lasting friendships.
Thank you for your generosity! My family and I greatly appreciate your financial support. With your help, I can enhance my artistic skills and explore my passion for art at Skidmore Pre-College. Your donation will really help me become skilled in studio art, which is a tremendous help for my future as an architect.
