My passion is leadership.
Leadership became my passion after seeing the effects of the lack of leadership in society, which made me want to make a change. For example, there are many stereotypes of African American females in society and leaders can change that. Passion, to me, can be defined by William Wallace in Braveheart who said, "They may take away our lives but they can never take our freedom."
Attending FIT High School Summer Live will help me fulfill my passion for leadership because in order to be a leader I need to be confident. I believe that joining this program will give me the extra push to stop being insecure.
"N'Kaela is one of the strongest students I've ever had the pleasure of teaching. She is both hard-working and brilliant, and has such a tremendous focus on her academics. I remember that as our number one ranked student in seventh grade, she showed leadership by helping and tutoring those who didn't master the material as easily as she did.
N'Kaela is a good candidate for FIT High School Summer Live because she is full of potential. She is passionate and motivated and will be successful at anything she puts her mind to. A program like this would really open the door for N'Kaela to take off."
This summer at the Fashion Institute of Technology was amazing! There were tons of people from all over the world, such as France, Asia, and the Middle East, who came together to share our passion for fashion. My first class was "In Store Merchandising" with Professor Mary Costantini. Professor has a long background in fashion, from working as the manager at Daffy's to working many fashion shows. Our first project was to choose a shoe of our own and create a display in order to make someone to want to buy it. After going on trips to Macy's, Urban Outfitters, and Victoria's Secret and looking at the displays, I chose to create my shoe display based on the Victoria's Secret Angel models: I created wings that I placed on my shoes. My second project in that class was to create a presentation based on a designer or store with a partner. My partner and I chose the Calvin Klein Fall collection and the designer Francisco Closta. Putting together the mannequin was difficult because we had to base it off the clothes in the collection and the clothes provided for us. However, it was also fun getting to see the many different mannequins and seeing different styles. The students in this class opened my eyes to a lot of new stores and styles. After the first class, we had a break for lunch ,and it was very exciting exploring New York in search of places to eat in close proximity to FIT. My second class was "Creating the Fashion Figure" with Professor Rosalba Emmanuel-King. When I first came into this class, I had some experience with drawing. However, this professor taught me exactly how to draw the fashion figure. Everyone was able to pass the test on the first week. Professor brought in tons of fashion magazines for us to take and clothes for us to draw. This class was very interesting. Our project was to choose a place or culture in the world and draw clothes on the fashion figure that would fit the specific culture. I chose Greece and many of there clothes involve draping. Therefore, it was very interesting looking at the clothes from a different country on top of meeting the different international people in this class. Overall, being in New York for 3 weeks was a great experience for me! Even after FIT I am still drawing clothes in my Marker Pad. I really would love to go back again and pursue fashion!
I am so excited to be accepted into both Wishbone and FIT. Along with leadership being my passion, my other passion is design. Ever since I was born, I have always dressed very fashionably. My mother calls me "her little fashionista." I remember when I was ten years old, I learned how to sew by hand and use my mother's sewing machine. Ever since then, I have been hooked on Fashion and Design, from looking at fashion magazines to wearing the most fashionable clothes I can get my hands on. Thus, I would love to thank all of my donors, Ms. McNickle, my mother, and Wishbone for allowing me the great opportunity to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology!!
Congtratulations, N'Kaela, for getting into this program! You EARNED it, and we are so excited to hear all about it.
