Ikepreet's Story

My passion is helping others.

The past couple years my grandma has been to the hospital several times and had surgery many times. It always hurt to see her in pain inside, although I never told her or anyone. My mom is a medical assistant. She always helps my grandma with any medical type problem she has. All this has inspired me to become a surgeon. Being able to save someone's life is something I dream of doing all the time.

Attending the NSLC Medicine & Healthcare program will help me explore my passion by allowing me the opportunity to see if this is a career I want to pursue. This program will give me a bit of insight on what it is like to actually be a surgeon and what type of skills and techniques are needed.

A Note from Mr. Laughlin, Ikepreet's Teacher

"Ikepreet is a fantastic candidate for the NSLC Medicine and Healthcare program. She takes her math and science classes very seriously with the goal of entering the medical field. However, given limited resources, we are unable to provide her with structured courses in medical science. This program will be an excellent opportunity for Ikepreet to explore her passion thoroughly with the supports provided by the program.

Ikepreet will also have a positive effect on the students around her. Her greatest strength is her attitude and positive demeanor towards her classmates. I expect Ikepreet to respond to group projects and activates with a positive attitude and an enthusiasm that improves the well-being of those around her."

Eye Opening Experience at NSLC

Where to start. The night before attending this program I could not sleep at all because of all the excitement I was feeling. The first day I got to Berkeley, I was so nervous yet excited to meet my TA group, my roommates, and all the people in the Med program just like me. Overall, my experience at NSLC was like no other. I was able to realize that maybe surgery is not a career I want to pursue. I went to the Zuckerberg Hospital in San Francisco and my excitement was out of the world. On this day, we learned how to do IV injections in a patient, how to count someone's blood pressure, and what to assess for when a trauma comes in. We also visited the Gladstone Institute and heard a lecture on AIDS and we went into depth on what happens with the DNA and many other parts of the body. All in all, if I had the chance to do this program again I wouldn't think twice. Thank you to everyone for allowing me to attend this program and giving me this eye opening opportunity.

On this day, we learned how to suture and after many attempts I feel confident in suturing.

On this day, we learned how to do burr holes. And the next day we practiced on fetal pig brains.

If you didn't already know my wife is a doctor. I know first hand that if you decided to follow a career in medicine that it will be one of the most difficult and challenging things you will ever do, but it will also be one of the most rewarding. A strong work ethic, dedication, kindness and compassion are all essential. I believe you have each of these qualities. Very best of luck in reaching your goal.
