My passion for helping people makes me excited because I know that I am caring for someone who is in need. It is much more exciting to know that having a career in the medical field, I will have the opportunity to study medicine in order to help the sick be healthy again. I feel ecstatic when I pursue this passion because it is something that brings a lot of curiosity out of me. I begin to ask myself many questions, for example, how will this medicine help the human body be healthy again? How will this medicine prevent this sickness from occurring again? Will the body react differently under different circumstances such as dehydration, or fever? These questions will help me to avoid making any mistakes that might harm the patient. Ultimately, this curiosity and urge to obtain the knowledge of medicine will help me tremendously in being able to nurse the sick back to health.
Julissa is a young woman who has excelled academically and has some experience with extracurriculars. She would benefit greatly from extracurricular programs because it would give her the opportunity to explore other environments and step out of her comfort zone to further develop her identity as an individual.Julissa has younger siblings who look up to her as a role model and a source of inspiration. She has done well, so far, in setting a good example. I believe that the more exposure she has to these types of extracurriculars, the better off she will be. However, Julissa will be impacting younger students, her siblings, by demonstrating the possibilities that are open to them, despite being part of a low-income community.
While I was at Georgetown this summer, I studied many different topics, such as the functions of the heart, the lungs, the gastrointestinal system, and many others. I was surprised that we had the opportunity to dissect rats and then later look at cadavers so we can learn about internal organs and their purposes.
The event that had the most significant impact on me was when I was able to see and feel a human cadaver in order to fully understand how the different systems of the body work. It was significant because I had only seen cadavers at funerals, and being able to know that I am not afraid of being around them further confirms my desire to go into the medical field. Strangely, I wasn't uncomfortable being around cadavers. A couple days into my summer program, I felt very comfortable with my schedule and the campus.
Attending this program has definitely confirmed my desire to extend my studies in the medical field because I absolutely loved the hands-on learning we did there. I would most definitely recommend this program to a friend who was interested in medicine. Being able to be in an environment where people share the same interests as you is really great because you can relate on so many levels as to why you personally want to become a doctor. Alongside recommending the program, the advice I would give them would be to make lots of friends. During my session, I met people from different parts of the world like India, China, Peru and Spain. It was really interesting to hear about their homes and their foods.
Going to the Georgetown Medical Institute is an amazing opportunity for me. I am most excited about being able to learn more about medicine. My main goal is to maintain my concentration and ask many questions in order to gain as much knowledge as I can and take advantage of my time while I am at Georgetown. I am really nervous about being away from my family for a week. It will be a great challenge for me and it’s going to take a lot of grit for me to step out of my comfort-zone but I can’t allow such a great opportunity to slip through my fingers just because I have never been away from my family. I will overcome this challenge by focusing on the permanent benefits I will obtain from attending this program instead of the temporary feeling of being homesick. Thank you so much for helping make this a reality.
Thank you so much for your generosity! I really appreciate your support in helping me be able to go to the Georgetown Medical Institute. Without your support I wouldn't be able to attend this program. Your donation will help me gain medical skills that will be beneficial to me in my future as I pursue my career as a nurse. You've helped my family and I tremendously. Thank you.
