My passion for nursing began a few years ago. It was after shadowing CNA's while volunteering at a nursing home that I realized the impact nurses make in a person's life. These experiences have really shaped my passion in which I learned that nurses provide both mental and physical support to their patients. A nurse can make a difference in his/her community by working at a high school, trauma unit, assisting the delivery of newborns, etc. Nursing is an incredible career and I hope one day I will accomplish my goal of being one!
NSCL Nursing will help me gain leadership skills needed as a nurse, understanding of the difficulties nurses face, and hands on experience. The program highlights are a midwifery lab, mock code, and I would have the chance to become CPR certified! I cannot stress enough how fascinating this program looks for young students hoping to pursue nursing. It is amazing that high school students could gain this experience before attending college.
I have known Katherine for almost two years as a former student in my Accelerated 9th Grade Freshman English class. It is an honor to be asked to speak on her behalf and I am thrilled to be able to offer my continued mentorship to her. Katherine is a student who stood out to me, even from day one, and she is a student who I felt a deep sense of pride for. She was the student everyone looked up to, her work was completed on time, and completed well, but it was the care that showed through so clearly that made her shine. She works hard, in fact, she worked harder than the majority of her peers. Katherine was one of the rare student's that I knew I was always able to count on. Not only was she a reliable student in terms of attendance, but she was consistently prepared for class with materials and assignments. You can see in the way she carries herself; she stands tall, she has poise and grace, that she cares about her future. This is a young woman who constantly has her endgame in mind.
A nurse often works a twelve or more hour shift with small breaks in between. A day at Yale: NSLC for Nursing prepared us for that. Days were packed with activities from 7:30 in the morning until 11 o’clock at night. These activities packed into our day were all relevant to eveyone’s interest which was nursing. We had nurse guest speakers, we learned more about the college application process, we learned about specific areas nurses could specialize in, we had real-life simulation labs, and we even became cpr certified. On top of all that I was able to bond with the girls in my group while not realizing I could become so close to them. The leadership based activities helped me gain confidence to learn more about people, about myself, and about conflict-resolution. They also helped me realize that no matter where people come from we can come together because of a common interest and common struggles that we might have shared. That’s not all, NSLC: Nursing at Yale also expected us to complete a project with about 12 other girls which really taught me how to listen to the ideas of many and somehow incorporate all of them into 1 final project. Finally, they provided us with a recommendation letter which will look amazing for college. Many people do not get the chance to experience something like this and I am so grateful wishbone, my advocate, and of course the donors made it possible for me to experience the NSLC: Nursing at Yale.
Hello! I’m so excited to have been given the opportunity to attend the National Student Leader Conference at Yale. This program is not only going to enrich my leadership skills, but it is going to give me insight on nursing. I hope to gain a lot from this program because it allows me to participate in a mid-wife simulation lab, become CPR certified, and on top that I will be meeting new people. Plus, Yale is a beautiful campus and I’m really looking forward to staying there overnight. I am so thankful for Wishbone for helping me every step of the way before, during, and after my campaign that raised money for this program. By helping me attend this program, you have helped me become one step closer to achieving my dreams of becoming a registered nurse. Thank you, I can’t want for July 18th!
