johnathan's Story

My passion is basketball.

My name is Johnathan Ortiz, and my passion for basketball started when I was a little kid. I once saw my dad play basketball at the park and I always wanted to be like my dad so I started playing basketball until I was in middle school. It was then that I started to take the sport seriously, and my dad and started practicing together. He helped me develop my game: I couldn't shoot and or dribble with my head up so my dad helped me work on my dribble first and then my shot. The first game I played was a 3 on 3 game and I was the shortest player. I got blocked over and over again so I almost gave up playing basketball. However, my dad taught me how to use my height and speed to my advantage. Then I joined my middle school team and became even better than before.

A Note from Ms. Norige, johnathan's

Johnathan is an ideal candidate for the US Sports Nike Basketball Camp! He dreams of going, and talks about it constantly. His circumstances do not allow him the opportunity to get out of East Hartford, meet new fellow players, and explore the world of basketball.

Johnathan will benefit in several ways. His love of basketball will help him to increase his skills on the court. He also will benefit off the court as well. Meeting fellow students that are like minded will give Johnathan a sense of community and allow him to feel like he belongs to something special. Also, having Johnathan leave East Hartford will allow him to see other parts of the U.S., meet new people, and experience new cultures and environments.
