Bryan's Story

My passion is soccer and athletics..

I found out I was passionate about being outdoors and playing sports my passion because whenever I play soccer I have this feeling that I never get while playing any other sport or doing any other activities. It makes me feel hyped up and it gives me adrenaline. I can get competitive and want to play even harder. I have been playing soccer since I was little and my mom said I used to have a lot of energy when I was little. However, I still love playing but all of my energy changed because now I’m all grown and use all my energy at school and doing other activities.

The Nike Soccer Camp will help me explore my passion because I will find other people who also have a similar passion with soccer. I want to build a bond with them and play soccer with them. This person might even live in my area and we would be able to meet up and have a little friendly scrimmage. I will also have time to play soccer and won’t have to do it whenever I have free time. I will be able to find out if I’m good at soccer. Another way it will help me find my passion is because maybe it will motivate me to join a team and play in competitions.

Coming from the Watts community in California may be hard to succeed there aren’t many opportunities that come out of our community. Most people think we have no chance to succeed because of our low education and the perception that people who grow up in low-income households won't make it far in life. I am working to overcome this obstacle by looking for opportunities to perfect my skills or at least improve them. Also I am looking to find all sorts of skills I have so if I fail in one path I can just follow the other path.

A Note from Ms. Gonzalez, Bryan's Mentor

Bryan is an exceptional student. When he is asked to participate in programs or events, he is one of the first students who volunteers to do so. In the time that I have known Bryan, I have noticed that he has great motivation to go above and beyond what is required of him. Bryan has the resilience to persevere through challenges and overcome them. During the time that Bryan is not volunteering, attending his JROTC practice, attending College Track or other events, he is very passionate about soccer. He loves the feeling of adrenaline that he encounters while playing soccer. On his free time, soccer is his passion in order to relieve stress. Bryan lives in a community where there are a limited amount of resources provided to him. He lives in a low income community and is surrounded by violence and crimes. Although he realizes this, he is passionate to overcome the stereotype of young adults from his community not making it far in life. Bryan explores his passion of soccer by playing every opportunity he gets.
