My passion is psychology. I can vividly remember the day when I discovered my passion for psychology. I was sitting in my seventh grade Academically Talented class when my teacher wrote on the board, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” I was in the middle of a philosophy unit, so I was taught to ALWAYS ask questions and to never settle for the "what" without demanding the "why." Nonetheless, this was profoundly thought provoking, and I immediately wondered what made this saying so true. My previous misconception was that human perception depended solely upon circumstance, or a universally accepted truth. It is a fact that the human brain is more complex than any piece of technology in this world. With psychology, I am able to try to comprehend how that extraordinary organ works while backing it up with scientific, quantifiable research.
In order to improve on anything, you need to take it on head first and completely immerse yourself in it to make a lasting impact. This is very similar to learning a language. I studied the vocabulary for years, and I knew how to string the words together to form a sentence. The problem was that I didn't apply it to my daily life, so it had no meaning, no substance. According to Harvard itself, The Harvard Pre-College Program is an immersive, collaborative, and transformative residential experience. By fully immersing myself into the university experience, I can not only study psychology, but be in such a setting that would further aid me to implement my studies into daily life to fully grasp it and never let it go.
Akeria is a down to earth student that enjoys reading and conversation. She is a student that is engaging in the classroom which allows her to apply the things she learns from her teachers, to her every day life. I have learned that because of how organized she is, accompanied with the type of work-ethic she brings forth; she is never afraid of a challenge. Akeria is also an opportunist and I think she has a good vision of what she wants in life. The Harvard Pre-College Program is something the school presented to many of the high achieving students in our school. Many of them will not take the initiative to do the things needed to be involved in this great opportunity. Akeria is not one of those students.
I think it is a testament to the student character that she already has explored and interest that she is becoming passionate about. Most students her age from my experience have no idea as to what to pursue in the future nor have they began to look into anything. I think that Akeira immerses her self the information proved to her in the classes and has used that into looking at possible career interest in the future. She is a thinker which is in my opinion one of the best compliments one can have. Often times in this day and age of Google and instant technology. Students tend to look for the easy way out. I often hear teachers say things like "use your brain", or "let's take a second to think about this". I think these are things Akeria just does naturally as she has and inquisitive mind. Which Ironically enough, I feel is the reason she is looking to learn more about of the human mind thinks.
It is currently the second to last day of this program, and I can’t believe it’s almost over. This has been truly a transformative experience and I’m gratfeul for every minute of it. I absolutely loved my class and my professor. There was a lot to be learned and I feel that I was definitely challenged the entire time. Lastly,I made amazing friends in this that I wouldn’t trade for the entire world. Overall, going to this program was arguably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I’ll never forget the Harvard Pre-College Program and all that it’s taught me.
My campaign was fully funded on March 29, and I couldn't be happier. Summer is quickly approaching, and I can't wait to see what will happen next. I know the experience will be great, and I just wanted to thank all who donated. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't be able to look forward to possibly the best two weeks ever!
