My mom and dad came from Mexico and met here. They left behind their families to provide for them and to earn money. They also left behind their education in pursuit for a better lifestyle. After being in the US for a while they moved to East New York. Living in a bad neighborhood made me want to strive for a better life style. After a slot opened for entering a charter school, my mom took advantage of it and enrolled us in it. Entering into a new school was challenging because of the new people, strict rules, and discipline needed to achieve. I acknowledged that it was going to be hard, but I still promised to myself that I was not going to let the sacrifices my parents went through go waste.
I want to attend Exeter because I want to learn how to be independent. The long period away from home will be able to help me prepare for what college life and college responsibilities will be like. I also want to discover what I want to pursue as my career. By taking different classes, I will be able to discover what I am interested in. Our school does not provide many classes because it is a small school. It also This will eventually help me figure out what I want to major in college.
What sets Exeter aside from other programs is the large amount and variety offered. This helps people from different countries come together and focus on one subject. It also offers small classroom settings to help each person learn from one another and help out anyone who needs it. The program uses “Harkness table,” which means students learn from each other around a small circle table. Another thing that sets Exeter aside is the interest of the program to help find what students want; they do not pick the classes for you, but let you pick what you are interested in. The final thing that sets Exeter apart is the different students from different countries and backgrounds coming together to interact with different people.
I have known Ariella for two years as her advisor, guidance counselor, and College Readiness teacher.
It has been an absolute pleasure to know Ariella for the past two years. She is the kind of student every teacher remembers - smart as a whip, hard-working, humble, initially quiet, and gut-splittingly hilarious to talk to once you get to know her.
Ariella would benefit immensely from attending Summer School at Phillips Exeter Academy for several reasons.
First, she would at last be in an environment of equals. She has risen to the top of her class, and now needs to be pushed further than our small community is able to push her. Pardon my cliche: Ariella needs to be a small fish in a big pond for a while.
Second, it would allow Ariella to take a wider variety of classes than our school is able to offer and it would push her skills in seminar discussion. Even though she is brilliant, Ariella is naturally a bit reticent, so a summer at the Harkness Table would be enormously beneficial, no matter what courses she chooses.
Third, Ariella would thrive on the balance of independence and responsibility that Exeter offers. She will finally be able to play tennis in the afternoons and be able to organize her schedule as she sees fit. Our school's schedule is intense and somewhat micro-managed. At Exeter, Ariella will need to manage her free time and take responsibility for her own understanding.
I am ecstatic to go to Exeter because of the multiple programs offered and the different people I will be meeting with the same interest as me. Going away for five weeks will help me gain independence, which I am excited to learn with other youth who are also attending. I am nervous about managing my time with the amount of work each night with homework. I am hesitant about the types of classes I will take because I've agreed to take classes that are out of my comfort zone. These classes include Biology and Trigonometry, which I know I can succeed in if I ask for help whenever I am stuck on a problem or unsure of the answer. Thank you again for helping me with this opportunity!
Thank you tremendously for your donations! I appreciate your selflessness and support. By making this donation, you will help me explore my interest at Exeter's summer school.I cannot thank you enough for supporting me to become a better student and an independent young lady.
