My passion is health.
In the past summer, I recall seeing my grandfather go through multiple heart surgeries because of his senior age. This made me reflect on the memories that we had and how there was nothing I could do to help him. Instead of going over all of his health issues and deciding if surgery was still necessary, the doctors decided to prescribe him several medications. I became very vexed at the doctor for prescribing ineffective medications. This inspired me to become a doctor who will stay committed to help people get to a healthier state in their life.
I will develop my passion for health by attending the Stanford Medical program, which will allow me to expand my knowledge on health. Being part of a community like this will motivate me to make a difference in my own community where there is a great need for more information on health and wellness. Not only will I help people in my community, but I will continue to gain knowledge on health and take it out of state to third world countries that do not have access to healthcare as Americans do.
"Having worked with Robin since his freshmen year, I can attest to his tremendous growth both academically and personally. Robin thrives in a community of like-minded and driven students. He is one of our most motivated juniors and has pushed himself this year in new ways academically and socially, finding more fulfillment in his classes and more grounding in his social groups. This program will benefit Robin in allowing him to spend time truly exploring his dream career with other students who can inspire him and a program that believes in him."
I participated in a Stanford medical program for 5 weeks. In this program, I interned at the Stanford hospital and specifically worked in the cancer department. I saw a bone marrow transplant, brain surgery, blood marrow transplant, splenectomy, appendectomy and more. I took anatomy class twice a week and for the first half our teacher lectured and then the second half we went into the lab and worked with cadavers. I was able to open up the body, identify different parts and examine what I learned earlier. In addition, I took different health disparity lectures, power, privilege, health, nutrition, etc. Additionally, I took SAT classes, a session with a college administrator, and resume classes. The experience was a life-changing one for me. I got hands on learning in college lectures and labs and was able to learn more about the medical field. I was able to improve my public speaking skills by speaking in front of many people multiple times as well as conducting research. I learned I can make an impact in the world when I grow up through saving people and helping them. The overall experience allowed me to learn about what I need to do in order to be prepared for college.
I will be attending a medical program at Stanford. At Stanford, I will be learning about medicine in class lectures with professors and doctors who work at Stanford. In addition, I will also be participating in a Stanford hospital internship; they will place me in the hospital and help me expand my knowledge in one area. I chose this program because I have a big interest in medicine and Stanford provided me the program I was seeking. Furthermore, I was interested in the additional scholarships and classes they provided with this program. I am looking forward to learning how to collaborate with my peers and learn more about medicine.
