Jariah's Story

My passion is Law.

I discovered this passion when I found it to be normal in our society that being a black female I am an target and can be a statistic as the next black women to fail or be a housewife. I know I want to be a part of the solution to the problem that the world has and make a difference by making sure a family can sleep well at night knowing the murderer of their child has been brought to justice. My mom always taught to give back. I may not be the richest, but I know where I started.

Centenary Summer Scholars will help me improve and give me more insight as to what I need to do in order to achieve my goal of helping those around me. Criminal justice is a field I would like to study, and if I can get an head start it will better prepare me for my future as to what it takes to be a part of the solution and not the problem at hand. This will give me an opportunity to experience and know if this is something I would love to do in the future.

A Note from Ms. Jemison, Jariah's Mentor

Jariah has expressed ongoing interest in criminal justice since 5th grade. She has been interested in providing a voice to underrepresented individuals and wants to use her talents to strategically explore ways people who are incarcerated can be reintroduced to society in productive and humane ways. Jariah is interested in learning ways to support people labeled as criminals in compassionate ways, and wants to use her education to empower her community.

My Experience

The Program was an amazing experience for me and my future career. This program allowed me to see what I always wanted to do come to fruition before my eyes. It was a life changing experience helped me understand how forensics is used in the criminal system. During the week, I was able to be on a real college campus and have classes, three hour lectures, and labs in which we talked about crime shows and how they portray a certain image. Also, I learned how to lift and how to dust crime scenes. I also learned about many different cultures because there were students from Spain, China, etc. which was pretty cool. One important thing I learned was to open up more and become more social during the time I spent there. It was a judgement free zone.

My Future

I am participating in Centenary Summer Scholars: Forensic Science. This is a great opportunity for me to branch out and learn more about what I want to do in the near future. I am excited for this program because I don't have opportunities to take classes that I would like to in school. This program will help me to develop the skills that I need in order to pursue my dreams and for them to come to fruition. I am looking forward to meeting new people who have the same goals and same passion as me. Watching criminal shows such as CSI,Law and Order, etc. has made me want to branch out into things of this nature. This program will help me to see what I need to do and if this is something I can see myself doing and making it a career.
