I discovered my passion for college when President Obama was elected in 2008. As a woman of color, seeing someone like me be the President of a country that had a history of segregation and racism inspired me to desire being in a college to learn about being a catalyst for change in the world. Moreover, through taking nonfiction and American history in middle school and AP World History and AP American History in high school, I've always enjoyed learning and always have been an active student. Being able to go to college, I've realized, will be the first step to enable me to change and impact the world.
Parsons Pre-College Academy will allow me to get a deep understanding of what it's like to be on campus and in college through art courses - one of my passions. Through being involved in this program, I will be able to navigate a college campus, partake in college-level discussions and meet like-minded individuals. The most important takeaway from Parsons Pre-College Academy will be to experience college beforehand, so when I go to university, it will not be a rough transition. As a result, college will be more enjoyable, and I can focus more on my academics and my goals.
Genesis, only in her junior year, is ready for learning at a higher level. I can easily see her thriving at the next level and starting with a program that exposes her to college texts, college discussion and a college atmosphere is crucial to her continued growth. She reads carefully seeking content and detail but also examining the process of history and understanding changes and continuities over time. Just a taste of the college world through Parsons Pre-College Academy as she heads into her final year of high school will undoubtedly continue her set up for future success.
I would like to start this update by just saying again thank you to all the donors and your help with getting me to Parsons Pre-College program. Without your help my experiment at Parsons would not have been possible. At Parsons I meet many students with varying art styles and made friends from different walks of life. This experience at Parsons sparked my desire to be more creative and got me out of comfort zone as I got one on one critiques. I ultimately can say that my weeks at Parsons really helped me explore art being one of my passions aside from history.
Thank you everyone who donated to my Wishbone campaign! Without your help I wouldn't be able to cultivate my interest in illustration and drawing. This is a field that I have been very passionate about but have never pursued. With your help I am now able to go this program. As I take the train to and back from Parsons I will keep in mind that you guys are the reason why I'm able to go to Parsons. Since this is a new experience for me, I hope that this opportunity will help me grow my communication skills and of course my artistic abilities.
Go Genesis!
