My passion lays in the subjects of Science and Mathematics. I seek to expand my scientific knowledge on human and environmental development and help others, whether human or not, through my studies. Growing up, I have always desired pursuing a career in the science field. What makes me the most excited about my passion for science is knowing that one day I will able to use to use it to save the lives of those who are in need, even if not directly, and even possibly contribute to the scientific world with my findings. When I am pursuing this passion, I feel invincible as well as enlightened. When I do not understand a subject that interests me notwithstanding, I study it until I have gained true comprehension of the topic because I believe it will take me one step closer to my future success. Ultimately, I take great joy in feeling experienced and knowledgeable enough to change someone’s life, and at the same time, my own.
I have always sought opportunities to learn about the world and improve myself. With the Ecology Project International I will step out of my comfort zone and experience a new environment. It would also allow me to become more knowledgeable on wildlife, what humans have done to endanger it, and the various international efforts focused on its conservation. With this program, I would be able to participate in projects helping to protect endangered habitats, acquire new skills, and develop meaningful relationships with my instructors and my peers. Ultimately, I will be able to formulate a basis for the career I will pursue in the future and give me a new perspective from which to observe life.
I first met Darlyn last year, when she was a ninth grader in my global history class at the High School of American Studies at Lehman College. We are a specialized, or magnet high school in New York City. Admission to our school is extremely competitive, determined through a citywide exam. We get large groups of students from middle schools that serve affluent neighborhoods, where the parents often pay for expensive test prep courses and tutors. That is not Darlyn’s background. She came to us from a Bronx Middle school that rarely manages to send us a student. And yet, Darlyn has not only held her own, she has thrived. She is currently a student in my 10th grade Advanced Placement level world history course. Academically, no one works harder, and she earns impressive grades on rigorous coursework. She is inquisitive, and interested in a wide range of academic subjects from ecology to Ancient History. And while naturally she is shy, she pushes herself to participate in class. Darlyn is also a valued member of any group project because she is open-minded and cooperative, and yet committed to doing the best possible job.
Knowing that I will have the opportunity to visit the world's first national park is very exciting. By being a part of an effort to protect the wildlife in this national park, and play a role in the conservation of it, I will become more knowledgeable on the effects of human interactions with the environment. While attending this program, I will have set the goal of becoming more connected to the brilliance of nature and its science. I am a bit apprehensive about leaving the city to spend days tracking and observing animals in the wild, and in the midst interacting with my peers and group leaders, because I have never been a truly interactive person. An obstacle I may face is getting used to not having some commodities. However, it may not even present itself as a problem, as I will be entranced with what stands before me.
I would like to express my gratitude for your immense generosity. Your donation has granted me an opportunity to learn and participate in the conservation of wildlife in Montana, at Yellowstone National Park, the first national park in the world. Without your help, I wouldn’t have had a chance to explore my passion for nature by observing what lies beyond the expanses of human development. Again, I wish to thank you for this opportunity and for your tremendous benevolence.
