My passion is my community.
Living in a low-income community and having to hear constant comments about my school being a "drop-out factory" has shaped my passion because, despite the negativity, it is a place in which I belong. In Boyle Heights, people constantly fight a silent battle against displacement, however, many of those people getting displaced are not aware of the rights that protect them. Additionally, my classes at school are limited because of budget cuts, so many students are not able to practice their skills or even develop new ones. Witnessing these types of struggles has made me realize how much I value my community, and I want to try to help the injustices that my community has to overcome every single day.
Attending UCLA Model United Nations Summer Institute will help me develop my skills in the pre-law field in order to protect my community. This program will help me develop my speaking skills so I am able to communicate with my community and my school. This program will also teach me ways to articulate myself correctly in front of an audience.
"I often hear students superficially mention a career in law because "they like to argue," or they are "good at winning arguments." Jessica is one of the few students I have met whose interest in law comes from a deeper place. As an student who has observed the disadvantages of not being a U.S. citizen, Jessica speaks about being a lawyer with depth and substance rare for an 11th grader. Being a part of the UCLA Model United Nations Summer Institute would be an invaluable experience for Jessica who, coincidentally, wants to attend UCLA: her dream school."
Woah, I cannot put into words the amazing experience and self discovery that staying in the UCLA campus has brought me. It was the the greatest possible adventure I could have ever gone in. Model UN was an amazing program in which I was able to have fun and do something that I love. They put you through an amazing week in which I met incredible people that will forever be my friends. Thank you to all the donors, thank you for making this possible. Your generosity has helped me accomplish my dreams and has shaped my future more brightly.
Jessica - Congratulations and best of luck! :)
