My passion is science.
My family is from Mali, West Africa, and my most of my family lives there. Later in 2012-2013, my brother graduated from college and became a doctor. He worked at the hospital late nights, and sometimes have patients at his house. When I went to Africa last year, I was there when he was taking care of his patients and it was cool watching him. Also in the 8th grade, it was career day and a doctor came in the room to present. I was surprised she was an African-American women, yet proud. She showed us pictures of her patients and of her traveling the world. This showed me how I have to be grateful for my life because I'm in great condition and there are people dying everyday. That made me see the world from a different perspective and inspired me to help others. These events in my life inspired me to learn about science because it's a great subject.
The program iD Tech Camps is mainly about science/math/technology/engineering. If I get accepted to this program, I will get better grades. Going to the program will help me have more of an interest in these sciences since are all connected somehow, especially if we're going to be doing cool projects and labs. Technology also has to do with science so I'm sure I will learn many things about science and having more interest in science and understanding its cool assets is exactly why it's my passion. This program will make me decide what I want in the future and who I am.
Sokona is a great candidate for this program because of her personal vision and passion for STEM subjects. She doesn't just rest on her natural gifts, but relentlessly works to learn more. Sokona would benefit from this program because it would give her a chance to not only explore the technical side of biotechnology, but it would also allow her to join a community of creative, intelligent, and diverse peers who also love science. Sokona's abilities were so above many of her peers that she was often the lone student with her hand raised or the only one able to discuss complex algebra topics in class. At times, this may have been isolating for her. Being around a group of young future scientists will be huge for her confidence and self-perception as a woman with unlimited potential.
Sokona,
Here's to a bright future and doing great things for the world!
