My passion is biology.
When I was in seventh grade, my science teacher taught us about the DNA in the nucleus and how it tells you if you’re related to someone. She compared a cell to a cell factory because each organelle does different things to make the body function. I was so fascinated and started to wonder more things about cells. How can something so small do and tell us so much?
Attending Girls Love Science Too will help me develop my passion because I will have exposure to possible careers in science and meet new people with similar interests.
The first way I will develop my passion by attending this program is by getting exposure to new careers in science. Right now I know for sure that I would like to get a career in science but I don't know many options. The only careers that I know of are marine biologist, advanced-practice nurse, and veterinarian. These seem interesting, but greater knowledge will make sure that I get a job I like. In Girls Love Science Too, we’ll go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and people will talk to us about careers in science. I feel that this will inform me about possibilities for my future.
Additionally, I know that Girls Love Science Too is the right fit for me because I like having new experiences with new girls, and these girls will share my interest in biology. If I have friends that have the same passion as I do, they will help me to keep going in biology. Sometimes in science I might not know things or not understand them, but these girls won’t let me give up on my passion. Also, the girls at this camp are curious about science, and we will explore together. They will push me toward my goals. Additionally, I know that some girls that will attend this camp will have different backgrounds from mine. Viewing the different backgrounds of these girls will help me learn more about what it is like to live in different places, which will expand my knowledge of cultures. The girls I will meet at this camp will have a great impact on my future.
"The moment I heard about Wishbone, I thought of Guadalupe (Lupita). I called her up, and when I explained to her what Wishbone meant by a 'passion,' she thought for a minute and then said, 'Okay, I know what mine is: the cell.' I was blown away that such a young person could have such a specific and technical interest, and couldn’t wait to get started working with her. As we have spent time together, choosing her program, discussing its mission, learning about Wishbone, and preparing her application, I have come to know her even better and am even more convinced that she is exactly who Wishbone was created for. Lupita is a child of extraordinary capability and persistence with a passion for science and a devotion to her family. I have known since she was seven that Lupita would one day cure cancer or write a bestselling novel or build a Mars colony. This girl will undoubtedly move whatever mountain she chooses to.
Together, Wishbone and Girls Love Science Too will meet so many of Lupita’s needs: for access to high-quality extracurricular programing, to prepare for college, to develop herself for her family, to learn more about future options, to meet people outside of her own community, and simply to have her love of science nurtured. I cannot imagine anyone making better use of this sort of opportunity than Lupita."
My summer at Girls Love Science Too couldn’t have been any better! I spent a lot of time having fun with new friends. The program really helped me step out of my comfort zone and expand my knowledge of marine biology while doing interesting activities. On the first day, our group was introduced to the intertidal research project, which was about choosing a marine organism to study throughout the week. We would each be creating a poster to show the group interesting facts, pictures, and a food chain. The third day was even more exciting. We went to The Monterey Bay Research Institute and had the opportunity to meet many women working in science. One of the ladies was very inspiring. She explained how she moved from Scotland to develop new technology that will help explore life in the ocean. On the last day of the summer program, we presented our posters and had time to say goodbye to our new friends. Overall this experience was super amazing, and I want to give a big thanks to Wishbone and all the donors who gave me the opportunity to make this dream possible.
My school year has been super awesome! I was involved in many activities that I enjoyed. For example, through a program called Panthers Go to College, I went with a group of classmates to Portland on the last week of school. This trip was amazing we visited many different colleges and had the opportunity to know my classmates better outside of school. I am ready for more adventures at Girls Love Science Too with new people that will help me learn new things about myself. I do admit that I feel a little nervous, but it’s not going to be the first time I have been away from home. I am really eager to expand my knowledge about environmental issues like ocean pollution. The activity I am most excited about is doing the tide pool studies because I will get to examine organisms. I hope that by attending this program I am aware of more careers in science and make lasting friendships even if we live in different areas.
I just wanted to update all the wonderful people who donated to Lupita's campaign. Thanks to your collective generosity, her tuition to her *dream* summer program, Girls Love Science Too, has been fully funded! Lupita and I have been texting a lot as this process has unfolded, and she just keeps saying how EXCITED and GRATEFUL she is for all of this. I'm also incredibly excited and grateful--you reached out to support a child whom some of you don't even know, and she is now one step closer to her plan to find a career in biology. I look forward to keeping you updated as we get closer to camp time!
Sincerely,
Ingrid O'Brien
