My passion is education.
I realized my passion for learning after my first trip to Guatemala with a youth program, where I met indigenous Guatemalan girls. I learned that they couldn’t go to school because education was too expensive, even though they truly wanted to learn. After this experience, I became more motivated and passionate about getting my education and one day being able to support people who want to learn.
As an ambitious student, I would like the chance to attend SuperCamp Senior Forum. I hope this program will expand my education by giving me the opportunity to learn from peers and professors that I would not otherwise be able to meet. Being able to experience college classes in a vigorous learning environment would help me to visualize my future self in college.
The biggest obstacle that I've faced was being told in middle school that the only way to go to college was to go to a private high school. As the time came to apply to high school, we visited private schools where they had laptops for every kid, unlike my school in West Oakland, where we didn't have a library. Reality hit when I was rejected from these schools, and a part of me felt that I wouldn't make it to college.
I ended up going to a charter high school that promised the students a voice of opinion in the school. Even though my school isn't a private school with lots of money, the experience of having a voice has made me realize that it’s my actions that will get me to college.
"You would not know it when you meet Laneka, but she has faced some huge personal challenges in her young life. She is a triplet and her two brothers are moderate to severely disabled. Laneka lost her father to violence in her early elementary years and had to relocate to another city and begin a new life.
Laneka is active in her school community, participating in leadership activities while maintaining good grades. After school, she gets back on the bus to get to a local community center where she teaches two kung fu classes for children ages 5 to 14. In the evening, Laneka helps out at home with her brothers and twin younger sisters, finishes her homework, and gets ready for the next day. Everything Laneka has done demonstrates great drive to improve her situation and open doors to opportunity and growth.
Though Laneka has certainly not chosen a specific career, she has demonstrated an aptitude for teaching and is an active and industrious learner. The Wishbone program will offer her the chance to explore her interest in the teaching profession, and the SuperCamp Senior Forum will allow her to begin the process of preparation for college life."
My 10 week experience at super camp was one of a kind. It wasn't exactly what I expected, but definitely worth it. At Super Camp, I learned quantum learning strategies to help me succeed as a scholar. I met great people from all over the country, and can't wait to keep in touch with my friends from NY, Philadelphia, and Texas!
Thank you to all the people who jumped in feet first and offered Laneka support in her quest for higher learning. It was an amazing display of generosity and a tribute to how much we love and believe in Laneka Viney. I am sure we are all in agreement that we can't wait to hear stories from her adventures at UC Berkeley this summer.
