My passion is leadership.
I've always had a passion to help other people, although the things I can do are limited. When I was thirteen, in 2011, a giant earthquake and tsunami hit Japan. It killed over 15,000 people as it carried away ships, cars, and homes and triggered widespread fires that burned out of control. I was shocked and thought about things that I could do for those affected. I started to raise money at my elementary school and sent the donations to the stricken area. Even though the amount of money and supplies that we sent were negligible, I hoped that people who had received our donations felt supported and encouraged by us.
If I attend to Brown Leadership Institute, I will have a chance to discuss the challenges facing the world today, such as environmental destruction, the health crisis, wars, poverty, economic uncertainty, and social inequality. Also, I wish to communicate with lots of students who have a totally different background than I do so that I can expand my knowledge and view of the world. During the program, I will actually develop an action plan focused on a worldwide issue, and after the program, I can share my ideas and start an actual movement.
"Grace has displayed passion, persistence and motivation in many aspects of her personal and academic life. She is a hardworking and dedicated young lady who is a straight "A" student currently. Grace's passion to become a leader and one day work on behalf of women's rights for the betterment of the global society depicts her drive to better herself in the area of leadership where she can be a voice for activism.
Grace is a great candidate for the Brown Leadership Institute because of her perseverance throughout her young life. If accepted to Brown's Leadership Institute, Grace will be able to learn and develop her skills in the areas of public speaking and communication."
During my amazing two weeks at Brown Leadership Institute, I took a course called Global Development. During class, we had tons of discussion about development, and we learned real cases from different countries around the world and how organizations such as the United Nations have influenced each country's economy and politics. Each night we had to read a long but very interesting article about development.
Also, everyday, we had a workshop to help us develop leadership skills, such as public speaking skills, listening skills, social diversity, and different types of leadership. These workshops all together helped us to do well on our final project called Action Plan. Action Plan is a plan we invented to solve a social issue we really see as important; then, we bring it back from Brown to our local community and make our action plan to a real one. For my action plan, I decided to help single parent families. I made a website for parents to communicate online and decided to run an after school program, providing free academic support, for elementary and middle school students. This is the link to my website, please help me to spread the words. http://www.singleparentfamilychannel.org/
I'm almost have done with my junior year, and I'm super excited to attend to Brown Leadership Institute, a summer program at Brown University which starts in few days. The first reason why I chose this program is that it is only three hours from where I live, which I thought was important. Another reason that I chose to attend to this summer programs is that I think it will help to expand my future career no matter what career I will choose. During this program, we will talk about current issues around the world and actually create our own plans for these issues. I hope that it will be a great opportunity for me to try my ability to discuss, think, and show leadership. Anyways, I'm super excited to enjoy this experience with many other students from all around the world.
