Gabriel's Story

My passion is beating the odds.

Beating the odds became my passion when I learned that in 2009-2010, the national graduation rate for black male students was 52% versus 78% for white, non-Latino males. Seeing these statistics disturbed, troubled and perturbed me. From that point on, I made a commitment to not be a statistic. I do not want prisons to be built based upon projections from my behavior and grades. Instead, I want my behavior and grades to be the reason why I am accepted into prestigious colleges and universities.

The NSLC Forensic Science program will help me to develop my passion by exposing me to my career of interest on a prestigious university campus. I became interested in studying forensic science after being fascinated by shows like Law and Order and Crime Scene Investigation. I knew much of it was fiction, but the science aspect stood out to me. I plan on taking advantage of all the opportunities and challenges that this program has to offer.

"Gabriel is an intellectually curious young man with a strong love for learning. He will take full advantage of the empowering Wishbone community and the ample opportunities made available for students. He embraces all challenges and certainly rises to the occasion.

Gabriel will benefit from participating in NSLC Forensic Science because of the unique exposure to the field of forensic science that is offered by the program. I am confident that Gabriel will utilize his strong desire to learn, critical thinking skills, and collaborative nature to excel in the program. Furthermore, this program will provide him with an opportunity that many of our young men in the South Bronx do not have access to."

Can't wait for Georgetown

Thank you for helping me get this far. I am excited to participate in this excellent program, and with your support I'll be able to do this. I'll finally get more exposure and knowledge on the subject that I love. Hopefully, with the help of this program, the exposure and knowledge will lead to many great things. I can't explain how excited I am. I believe that this special program will give me a head start in pursuing my dreams of becoming a forensic scientist.
