My passion is volleyball.
I discovered my passion for volleyball in 9th grade, but I began playing volleyball with my friends in 8th grade. After starting high school at a very small charter school, one of my friends encouraged me to try out for the volleyball team. Thanks to her, I am where I am now. My school volleyball team has gone through so much and next season will be my last. During my 11th grade season, we made it to the championship game, but lost. During my final season, I am very determined to get the top spot with my team. Being that it will be my last season for high school volleyball, I want to make it memorable and I want to leave knowing I did my absolute best.
The Nike Volleyball Camp will allow me to further improve my skills and it will be a new experience. This camp will challenge my skill level so that I can better myself for my upcoming, final season. If I pursue volleyball in college, as a team or club sport, the experience I gain through Nike Volleyball Camp will let me transform into a better player who is suited for the college level. One of my goals is to graduate college and gain a stable job to make my family proud. I’ve told them that I want them to be proud of me and I’m waiting for the day that I walk off the stage with my bachelor’s degree.
I have known Miss Erica since she joined the Educational Talent Search (ETS) program at her middle school. ETS is a pre-college program that serves first generation and or low-income students to assist them in reaching their goals in going to college by providing various resources.
Erica immediately became very active in ETS by participating in weekly meetings and workshops, and showing a strong desire to learn more about going to college and what she needed to get there. Erica worked well with her fellow ETS peers, discussing her dreams of going to college. This is passion and dedication for one's education. I know she is ready to participate in a program where she will shine!
My time at volleyball camp was amazing. I made many friends and I went a bit out of my comfort zone. At first, I didn't think the camp was going to allow me to build upon the skills I had established. However, I began to see how each fundamental drill expanded the skills I already had. This camp was not only helpful, but also fun! We had a day of going to the boardwalk just to hang out with some of the friends we made during the trip. One of the most challenging activities was the afternoon of beach volleyball. It was interesting learning about the different rules of beach volleyball but it was also very hard to play it, especially in the heat. If I had another chance to go back to Nike Volleyball Camp, I definitely would.
This summer, thanks to my donors, I will be able to attend the Nike Volleyball Camp on UC Santa Cruz's campus. I not only will be able to see UC Santa Cruz in person and experience some of the college life, but I will also be able to practice and get better at one of the things I love -- volleyball. I feel that this summer will leave me with an important, vital experience, especially for my last volleyball season as a senior in high school. Hopefully, during this camp, I will be able to share what I love with other girls my age and learn ways to become a better player in my last season.
