My passion is coding.
At my high school, in Intro to Software Engineering class, we began learning Python, HTML, and CSS. Although I had no previous familiarity with coding or any form of computer science, the material was simple for me to understand, and I was able to advance quickly. A project that helped me recognize my passion for coding was a project in which I used HTML and CSS to design a website that linked to different pages within the site for Regents review. In this project, we had to understand HTML and CSS enough to design the website with minimal assistance. Being made to be completely independent helped me realize that I enjoyed coding and programming and the small details it entailed.
Attending iD Tech Camps New York would benefit my passion for coding by teaching me about other forms of technology such as robotics, hacking and electronic music and by furthering my knowledge about coding. A summer program dedicated to coding would ensure that the coding I learn in school will not fade over the summer and will most likely teach me new things that I have yet to learn relating to coding and computer science. Additional information about coding, computer science, and other forms of technology, would enable me to be ahead of my classes and would increase my independence with subjects related to technology. This opportunity would also benefit me overall by providing me with experience on what it would be like to be on a college campus.
Emily has done an amazing job of using online resources to further her knowledge of coding, especially the website Code Academy. Last year, she started using the website to learn both Python and HTML. She searched out the website because she wanted to learn more advanced concepts than what was being taught in class. As the year went on she realized she enjoyed the material so much she was using a lot of her free time learning as many new concepts as she could. Her passion for coding has continued this year, and she is using it to learn HTML and CSS.
Emily is a great candidate for the iD Tech Camps New York because she is passionate about technology and driven to learn. The hands on experiments will give her a side of technology she doesn't always get to experience and being with like minded peers, I think will push her to work harder than she has up to this point. Lastly, I think Emily will benefit a lot from being on a college campus and traveling.
At the program, we learned different coding languages starting from the lowest level language, binary, to the higher level languages such as C++ and Python. The lessons were organized into a game plan. I learned about the ways binary can be translated into different number systems including our own, decimal, and others like hexadecimal. We practice the translation between binary and hexadecimal using the calculator that comes pre-installed in a computer and a program that mirrored Commodore 64, the first computer to be widely accessible by middle-class households due to its lower than average price. After going over binary and assembly, we went on to higher level languages, meaning they were closer to English. During this, I noticed that C++ is very similar to Python except for the difference in how ending and commands. We were given complimentary water bottles, a USB for all our program files, and an IDTech t-shirt.
Right now at school I have been preparing for the Regents Exams. I've been doing extra prep after school and on Saturdays. One class I get a break from Regents prep is software engineering. There, we have been working on using functions and arrays within websites and now we are working on creating a "choose your own story" using JavaScript and HTML. The project has been hard because JavaScript has been complex as I'm still learning all the different language. I am excited about going to the iD Tech Camp in August because I get to learn more about Python and spend time on a college campus.
Hope you have a blast!!!
GOOD LUCK EMILY!!!!
It’s great to hear about your interest in coding. Continue your hard work and good luck to you !
I'm really excited for you to take on this opportunity!!
