My passion is Building Communities.
I am passionate about building communities. If you ever happen to come across a family photo album of mine, you can flip the pages and find my younger self surrounded by a carefully displayed array of toys in which I called “setups”. Setups were when I would gather all my toys ranging from a plastic zebra to a Winnie the Pooh figurine and pose them into small towns or cities. I’d give each character a job, home, and a family making sure all basic needs were met like a Farmer’s Market or a playground. Looking back, I have come to realize I love to organize and create harmony. I love to plan for a better world and truly enjoy building and improving the world around me. Creating plans and creating better communities is something I want and love to do.
The Brown Leadership Institute will help me explore my passion for building communities by introducing me to the tools and skills I need to create and improve the world around me. By being a part of this program, I will be able to build on my passion within the creation of a social action plan. This opportunity will strengthen my public speaking, allowing me to advocate for my community and build my overall confidence as a future community leader. With this opportunity I plan to apply all the knowledge and new found skills into my future and everyday life.
Alameda works as hard as any student I have ever taught and regularly advocates for herself. I taught Alameda in middle school and currently teach her in APWH. We have long days at Uncommon that make outside responsibilities or commitments difficult. However, Alameda has worked with teachers and administrators to allow for a regular early dismissal to attend her rowing club in Harlem, nearly 1.5 hours away on the subway. She set goals and check-ins around grades and work to ensure that she was not missing out on anything academically in her pursuits. She currently has the highest grade in APWH, even though she spends hours every week on the subway pursuing her rowing interests. Her dedication to the best opportunities available and the seriousness with which she approaches them is why Alameda makes a perfect Wishbone candidate.
The past two weeks that I have spent at the Brown Leadership Institute have been simply amazing. I have met so many educated and passionate individuals it is impossible not to find a greater passion within yourself, and challenge your mindset. I have met people from across the world (Dubai and Indonesia), and close to home in New York. To see the true depth of knowledge in my peers was so eye opening. My class on Global Development was everything I could have asked for. We talked about everything from the pros and cons of globalization, the stems of poverty, and participatory democracy. My professor was so educated, and I could only hope to hold myself as she did in the classroom.
The environment was so supportive and I know that my action plan, a plan everyone created in the institute to change their community, will not go to waste.
Thank you so much for this opportunity, this experience has been a once in a lifetime opportunity that I am very grateful for.
I am going to be taking a course on Global Development this summer within the Brown Leadership program. I am full of excitement to be taking these next steps because I will have the chance to analyze economic and societal developments around the world. This is a chance I wouldn't have received elsewhere and I am so grateful for it.
I look forward to the opportunities and relationships this program will bring me, and am so thankful for this experience.
We are so proud of you! Love you sweetie.
The world is out there waiting for you Ali! Imagine it and make it happen!
