My passion is fashion journalism.
Since I live in New York, I've been surrounded by fashionable people and have developed my own trends since I was young. During middle school, I began to get involved with fashion by taking fashion design classes, but I quickly learned that it wasn't for me. This past summer, I took a fashion styling course, and I realized that it was what I'm meant to do with my life. A lot of my friends have told me that I'm extremely fashionable, which has further encouraged me to take my talents and put them towards a career in a field that fascinates me.
Although fashion styling is my number one passion, I am also extremely passionate about writing. I learned to read when I was three years old, so I took an interest in literature from a very early age. As I've progressed through school, I've noticed that I'm great at creative writing, which my teachers have noticed as well. Recently, while looking at potential colleges that offer a major in fashion styling, I noticed that there are very few of them in America. So, I decided to combine my passion with my writing abilities and put them towards a career in fashion journalism. By taking the prestigious English and journalism courses at Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School, I'm hoping to sharpen my craft and learn more about writing and literature.
"I have found Kayla to be an extremely passionate, intellectually curious young women. She has most demonstrated this through her pursuit of outside activities and opportunities. Though seeking these out is by no means required, Kayla frequently stays after school with me to look for things to do outside of school, whether it's a summer program at the Fashion Institute of Technology or an volunteering opportunity. In our small, but growing school, Kayla has been an integral founding member of the Gay-Straight Alliance, which invites LGBT speakers in once a month to discuss promoting tolerance in high school.
Beyond the passion I mentioned above, I feel like Kayla's drive is what makes her an excellent candidate for Wishbone and Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School. Going to a small high school like ours, we have curriculum that is 90% core academic and collegiate prep, leaving few opportunities for students like Kayla to pursue personal interests, especially in the humanities and the arts. Going to Exeter for the summer would allow Kayla to explore subjects that she might not otherwise be able to."
I'm so ready to go to New Hampshire for the summer! I think this will be a learning experience both academically and socially. I've heard nothing but good things about the program, and I'm hoping that I'll be able to expand my knowledge in the areas of literature, gender studies, and journalism, as well as having a better understanding of what learning away from home is like. This is my first time going out of state for a summer program, and I am confident that I'll be able to make new friends and connections through my five weeks at Exeter. However, I'm a bit nervous about being so far from home, but I'm sure the nerves will calm down after I get more settled into campus. The program is 19 days away, and I can't wait to begin!
I am impressed at the way you've decided to combine your two interests: fashion and writing. Good luck!!
