My passion is helping others through medicine.
As a child, I was always thrilled when I went to the hospital because I gained the opportunity to observe doctors and see how they helped patients. As I continued to grow, I noticed that I would attempt to fix anything broken in order to make people happy. For the past two summers, I visited my sister in Nevada who is a nurse and observed the way she interacted with her patients. I also took a tour of the hospital; on this tour I was able to see the different staff members like doctors, nurses, and pharmacists work together.
My passion will be developed by learning about health and the medical field through the Centenary Summer Scholars: Pre-Med program. With the understanding and exposure I will receive through this program, I will be able to gain new knowledge, share knowledge, and continue to develop my passion.
"Makoyah expressed her passion for medicine to me during our first Big Brothers Big Sisters meeting. I was surprised that a sophomore in high school had such a strong sense of direction spurred by an intellectual curiosity I didn't see in other students. Makoyah makes sure to use each mentoring session to explore new paths that will lead to a career in helping people through medicine (e.g learning how to apply for programs such as this) and bolstering existing skills.
Makoyah's thirst for knowledge gives her a resilience and flourishing determination not seen in most teenagers. She will make full use of a program that can organize, guide, and help her ambitions thrive."
